Using Minecraft Earth to bring an overlooked piece of history to the attention of a new generation
Many Germans born after the fall of the Berlin Wall have little memory of the injustice and grief it caused.
Created in a joint initiative between VIRTUE Worldwide, No Sleep, and DDR Museum more than thirty years after the fall of the wall in 1989, teAR down this WALL is an educational tool for Minecraft Earth that allows users to place and tear down the Berlin wall in Augmented Reality. We rebuilt parts of the Berlin Wall digitally and placed them in their exact locations around Berlin.
Together with Virtue, the DDR museum spent more than 300 hours over 14 months in the game gathering relevant materials, including 2,5000 digital building blocks needed for a credible and historically correct AR reconstruction of the Berlin Wall. The experience included supporting educational material that helps students reflect on the history, impact, and devastating realities of how border walls divide people. Now, all over the world can now tear down the Wall together for the first time.
